February-March 2008

Tabusintac Local Service

January came and gave us a taste of an old fashioned winter; the groundhog did not see his shadow, so maybe we will have an early spring.  We can only hope!

The TCDCI will hold its annual meeting on March 4th, 2008, at 7.00pm in the community hall.  A guest speaker will talk on how to explore new ideas for our community.   Everyone is welcome.

The TCDCI spring supper will be held on Saturday, March 22nd, 2008, from 4-6pm. The menu is a roast pork dinner.   We will be starting our breakfasts on Saturday, May 17th.

The LSD meets on the second Tuesday of the month.  Everyone is welcome.

Memories of Tabusintac in the 1950’s & 60’s

First day of school.  New clothes, new books, maybe even a new classroom & teacher.

Last day of school.  Chanting, “No more scribblers, no more books, no more teachers’ cross-eyed looks.”

Practicing for the Christmas pageant at church and for the concert at school.

Putting metal icicles, one at a time, on the Christmas tree.

Christmas caroling to the shut-ins.

Church and community fund raising dinners.  Each one was like a mini-Old Home Week.

Hearing church chimes ring on the frosty air.

Sleigh rides by horse & sleigh on moonlit winter nights with everyone singing.

Skating on the ponds, river, and rink.  Sliding at Kitty’s Lump.

Winter carnival at the rink.  Excitement of the children dressed in their costumes & winning prizes.

As a child, how magical the Christmas lights looked shining through new fallen snow at night.

Lying face up in a field of tall grass and fragrant clover watching cloud pictures form in the sky.

Using baby oil to try for the darkest tan.

Finding robins’ eggs, watching the eggs hatch, seeing the mother birds feed the babies, and then watching the birds fly away when they got old enough.

To be continued again next month.

Thanks to Nancy Avery, Easter for these great memories

Roses are Red

Red roses proclaim "I love you." They are the ultimate symbol of romantic

love and enduring passion.

Yellow roses indicate friendship and freedom -- so don't send them if your intentions are romantic and long-lasting. Yellow roses are also appropriate

for sending congratulations to newlyweds, graduates, Texans, and new

mothers.

Pale pink roses connote grace, gentleness, and gratitude.

Light pink roses are a joy to behold and express fun and happiness.

Deep pink roses say "Thank you."

Lilac roses indicate the sender has fallen in love at first sight with the

recipient and is enchanted.

Pure white roses symbolize truth and innocence. They also send other

messages: "I miss you" and "You're heavenly."

Coral roses express one thing with their passionate color: Desire.

Peach roses speak of appreciation, gratitude, and also sympathy.

Orange roses communicate enthusiasm and desire on the part of the

sender.

Dead roses, regardless of the original color, dead roses say,

"It's over," loud and clear.

Jokes

Is That Mule For Sale

Farmer Jake had a nagging wife who made his life miserable.

The only real peace that he got was when he was out in the field plowing. One day when he was out in the field, Jake's wife

Brought his lunch to him.

Then she stayed while he quietly ate and berated him with a

constant stream of nagging and complaining. Suddenly, Jake's

old mule kicked up his back legs, striking the wife in the head,

and killing her instantly.

At the wake, Jake's minister noticed that when the women

offered sympathy to Jake he would nod his head up and down.

But when the men came up and spoke quietly to him, he would

shake his head from side to side.

When the wake was over and all the mourners had left, the

minister approached Jake and asked, 'Why was it that you

nodded your head up and down to all the women and shook

your head from side to side to all the men?'

'Well,' Jake replied, 'The women all said how nice she looked,

and her dress was so pretty, so I agreed by nodding my head

up and down. The men all asked, 'Is that mule for sale!?'

Tabusintac School

Tabusintac School has received approval for an Innovative Learning

Fund proposal. This project is titled “Outdoor Education and First Nations Heritage”. Burnt Church School has agreed to be a partner. The project will involve teaching the Middle School students aspects of First Nations culture.

For example, they will learn about the importance of Elders in First Nations Culture, skills related to the art of storytelling, and aspects of

First Nations Culture in the area of sport and outdoor education. Outdoor activities the students will participate in will include snowshoeing, archery, outdoor cooking, canoeing, and orienteering skills. There is also a significant technology component to the project involving digital videography, videoconferencingand the creation blogs and websites.

This is a two year project. Upon its completion, Middle School students will continue to use the equipment and be trained in outdoor skills through the

outdoor education component of the Physical Education curriculum.

The project would not have been possible without the assistance of Active Communities, First Nations Help Desk, Mikmaq Maliseet Institute at

St. Thomas University, the Tabusintac Local Service District and the

Tabusintac Club.

Tabusintac Community Center Inc.

Representatives of the Tabusintac Community Center Inc. met with Minister of Education Kelly Lamrock and MLA Carmel Robichaud,

Minister of Local Government, on January 22nd.

Minister Lamrock reaffirmed his commitment to the school/community center project. But the minister did note the start date of the school/community center project is being held up due to the shortfall of $250,000 for the community center portion of the project.

TCCI remains confident this shortfall will be raised over the next few months.

We appreciate the community's patience and support with this project. When it is built, this facility will serve you well.

No date has been scheduled for the annual meeting but it will be held sometime in March.

Valentine Traditions and Superstitions

Ancient Romans honored the goddess Juno on February 14th. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl

to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now

means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

Some people said if you found a glove on the road on Valentine's Day, your future beloved will have the other missing glove.

Some believed the first man's name you read in the paper or hear will be the name of the man you will marry.

Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seed that remain on the stem, and

that is the number of children you will have.

Or, cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you can also tell how many children you will have.
