March/April 2007

This time of year for many brings a time of reports, audits, planning, applications, Annual General meetings and preparing for the upcoming seasons, we encourage your attendance and support to encourage our volunteers and development of our community.

Spring is just a few days away and I hope everybody has adjusted to the new time change.  With lots of rain the brooks and streams as well as the river are getting very dangerous.

So Please be careful.

This time last year we were discussing the Cains Point Bridge .  Not much has changed since then.  We expect the bridge to open soon as work is underway to repair it once again.

With the snow disappearing and those lovely Tim Horton cups showing up all over the place we need all citizens to help clean up our beautiful community, as you are out enjoying your walk..  Please help out to keep Tabusintac clean.

Tabusintac Community Center Inc.

The annual meeting of the Tabusintac Community Center Inc. will be held Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.
This is an excellent opportunity for the community to be updated on the status of this very important project.

All are welcome and are encouraged to attend. It is very important to send a unified message to our elected officials at this critical point in the project. The provincial capital budget will be announced shortly.

The architectural plans of the structure will also be available to view.

TCCI has been working for six years to see the realization of a new school and community center complex for this community. It is a dream that is very, very close to becoming a reality.

The community's continued support is necessary. We hope you can attend.

Spring is just around the corner, get ready to trade in your old winter gear for rubber boots, your rain coat and an umbrella. Ah the joys of spring.

My family and I would like to thank all who have brought food, cards, donations and expressions of sympathy.

You all truly touched our hearts in our loss. My Granny-Moe meant the world to me. To know that so many people came to visit, really truly meant a lot. Tabusintac is a very special place filled with caring people. Again I thank you.

I would like to let everyone know that we now have a new selection of Pashmina Shawls. They are thick, excellent for this time of the year or in the fall. They sell for between $65 and $75. You will not be able to find any like them around. We also have new jewelry such as watches, necklaces and a new selection of key chains. Come in and see what we have, there is a little something for everyone.

We are again trying to help raise money for Special Olympics, we have a 50/50game being played, it costs only $5.00 to play, you get to pick eight numbers based on 649.The winner will collect half of the money raised. Please help support this worthy cause, the athletes and volunteers work very hard everyday to enable all involved to participate and have a great time.                                                     Winter Hours

Tabusintac Centennial Library and Museum

On Sunday, March 25th the Tabusintac Library and Museum will host a book launch with Sally Armstrong. She will visit with us at the Library from 2 p.m. and on. (Please see attached flyer)

Ms. Armstrong will read an excerpt from the book about her great-great-great grandmother. Following will be a book signing.

The book will be available for sale at the Library on that day for $34.95. Everyone is welcome to attend this event. It is a great honour for Tabusintac to have Armstrong visit with us and launch her book from Charlotte Taylor's home.

Below is a brief write-up about the book as found on the publisher's, Random House, website:

The epic true story of Charlotte Taylor, as told by her great-great-great-granddaughter, one of Canada’s foremost journalists.
In 1775, twenty-year-old Charlotte Taylor fled her English country house with her lover, the family’s black butler. To escape the fury of her father, they boarded a ship for the West Indies, but ten days after reaching shore, Charlotte’s lover died of yellow fever, leaving her alone and pregnant in Jamaica.
Undaunted, Charlotte swiftly made an alliance with a British naval commodore, who plied a trading route between the islands and British North America, and traveled north with him. She landed at the Baie de Chaleur, in what is present-day New Brunswick, where she found refuge with the Mi’kmaq and birthed her baby. In the sixty-six years that followed, she would have three husbands, nine more children and a lifelong relationship with an aboriginal man. Charlotte Taylor lived in the front row of history, walking the same paths as the expelled Acadians, the privateers of the British-American War and the newly arriving Loyalists. In a rough and beautiful landscape, she struggled to clear and claim land, and battled the devastating epidemics that stalked her growing family. Using a seamless blend of fact and fiction, Charlotte Taylor’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Sally Armstrong, reclaims the life of a dauntless and unusual woman and delivers living history with all the drama and sweep of a novel.

Good March and April to All:

We wanted to say thank-you to all those who helped out in our Traditional Ecological Atlas; either with pictures, stories, feedback or editing, it soon will be published.  We literally couldn’t have done it without you.

A newsletter will be published in the near future with current events and past projects of the last year involving the T.W.A.

Last but not least, we urge everyone to come out and attend a meeting that will be hosted by the Nature Conservancy of Canada concerning past and present projects and future plans for our watershed.  Keep in mind that some of these plans may affect the utilization of our watershed for the long-term benefits.

Next thing we know the river will be running, the salmon fishing will be kicking into gear and the lobster fishermen will be putting in their boats…sure sign the warmer months are to come!!!

Respectfully yours,

Billie-Joe Fowler,

Environmental Technologist

Thank You from the Kids

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED THEIR TIME, EFFORT, AND LABOUR INTO THE TABUSINTAC RINK.  IT WAS GREATLY APPRECIATED BY MANY FOR THOSE WHO ENJOYED THE FREE SKATING AND HOCKEY.

Is your Pet Carrier too big for your pet?
If it's significantly bigger than 28x28x53 cm (11x11x21 inches), I might like to swap.  Mine is a "Pet Taxi" brand, a bit wider in the middle than at top and bottom, recently cleaned and in good condition.  It's currently being used as a temporary doghouse by a puppy who will probably outgrow it sometime in April, possibly late this month (and who will be roughly the size of a Labrador at maturity). If you don't have a too-big pet carrier, do you perhaps have an old-fashioned hot water tank?  My woodfired cookstove has the pipes to heat water for one, and I'd like to set one up when I move the stove this summer.David Martin  776 3689  (My answering machine message says, "if you recognize my voice and have a message to leave, please do".)

Attention Seedsavers: and would-be seedsavers

A commercial gardener who recently moved here from BC, brought a good-sized
collection of saved vegetable, herb and a few flower seeds; and would like to
meet others interested in this traditional art to organize a swap-meet and
learn about the local garden club—or if need be, start one.

He may have an article ready for the April Tattler; but by then, some serious
gardeners will already be starting their plants; so anyone wanting to meet
later this month please call the Community Hall or email “Garden Enthusiasts”
