February/March 2007

It happened again, the Cains Point Bridge is closed.  The LSD was in contact with Andy Legere, the engineer from Chatham, who is in charge of the Dept. of Transportation for the area.  He said the head engineer from Fredericton examined the bridge and said it was not safe and had to be closed.  Mr. Legere will keep the LSD informed and I will keep the residents of Tabusintac informed as soon as I receive  any news.

Tabusintac Centennial Library and Museum

On Sunday, March 25th the Tabusintac Library and Museum will host a very special guest. Sally Armstrong, author of the Nine Lives of Charlotte Taylor: The First Woman Settler of the Miramichi, will visit with us at the Library from 2 p.m. and on. Ms. Armstrong will launch her new book, a historical fiction based on the life of the Mother of Tabusintac.

Ms. Armstrong will read an excerpt from the book about her great-great-great grandmother. Following will be a book signing.

The book will be available for sale at the Library on that day. The cost of the hardcover book is $34.95 plus tax.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event. It is a great honour for Tabusintac to have Armstrong visit with us and launch her book from Charlotte Taylor's home.

Below is a brief write-up about the book as found on the publisher's, Random House, website.

The epic true story of Charlotte Taylor, as told by her great-great-great-granddaughter, one of Canada’s foremost journalists.
In 1775, twenty-year-old Charlotte Taylor fled her English country house with her lover, the family’s black butler. To escape the fury of her father, they boarded a ship for the West Indies, but ten days after reaching shore, Charlotte’s lover died of yellow fever, leaving her alone and pregnant in Jamaica.
Undaunted, Charlotte swiftly made an alliance with a British naval commodore, who plied a trading route between the islands and British North America, and traveled north with him. She landed at the Baie de Chaleur, in what is present-day New Brunswick, where she found refuge with the Mi’kmaq and birthed her baby. In the sixty-six years that followed, she would have three husbands, nine more children and a lifelong relationship with an aboriginal man.
Charlotte Taylor lived in the front row of history, walking the same paths as the expelled Acadians, the privateers of the British-American War and the newly arriving Loyalists. In a rough and beautiful landscape, she struggled to clear and claim land, and battled the devastating epidemics that stalked her growing family. Using a seamless blend of fact and fiction, Charlotte Taylor’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Sally Armstrong, reclaims the life of a dauntless and unusual woman and delivers living history with all the drama and sweep of a novel

Hello Stakeholders!

Just wanted to bring to your attention that Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada would like your views in making an informed decision on whether to add American eel to the Species at Risk Act (SARA)- THE LIST OF WILDLIFE SECIES AT RISK as a species of SPECIAL CONCERN.  American eel was recently designated by the Committee on Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as SPECIAL CONCERN.  You may download a workbook, additional information, references and contact info at www.sararegistry.gc.ca/public/default_e.cfm  or you may pick up a copy at the Tabusintac Watershed.

I urge as many people to fill out these workbooks/questionnaires as possible regardless of what sector you may represent. The workbook/questionnaire is 6 pages that includes questions that you √ for your response; disagree to strongly agree answers; and two answer-questions that you may express your opinion with an area that you may add any additional comments or concerns.  These workbooks/questionnaires must be submitted by March 31, 2007.

Our Traditional Ecological Map is under wraps and would appreciate feedback on it before we publish.  If you are interested please call 779-1185.

Please keep in mind; we all need to take part in our watershed for its sustainability!

Best Regards,

Billie-Joe Fowler,

Environmental Technologist

Thank You

Many thanks to all those who attended my retirement party.  Thanks to all the organizers, those who contributed food and those who provided the music.  Thanks also for the many gifts
